Resources School

A number of Partner Schools with more STEAM experience and outstanding performance will be invited to be Resources Schools. Resources Schools will have full access to the educational resources developed by the Project Team, 1-2 teachers from the Resources Schools will co-develop the contents by reviewing the materials, and the teachers will become mentor teachers of their schools and among peers. Mentor teachers will have the privilege to join the tours to visit overseas STEAM schools under the Scheme to enrich their experience and share their experience with peers afterwards.

Workshop 12:
STEAM Activity: IoT x Micro:bit [New]

Date:

31 May 2023, Wednesday

Time:

14:30-17:30

Venue:

Room E1030, Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Speaker:

Dr Matthew LI, Senior Lecturer

Introduction:

Micro:bit is an excellent tool for students to learn about coding and programming. Electronic sensor is one of the applications of micro:bit and it is extremely useful in STEAM education. One of the advantages of using electronic sensors comparing to traditional measuring tools such as thermometer and secchi dish is that the data we obtained could be easily recorded and digitalized. Since the data is already digialized, it can be transferred over a network and we can monitor the data easily by using our computer or mobile device over the internet. This is known as the Internet of things (IoT).

In this workshop, we will show you how to use micro:bit to put IoT into practice. Different IoT methods such as makecode, excel and cloud service wil be introduced.

(We can help to implement the IoT at your school. Priority will be given to the teachers who joined this workshop)

Workshop 9:
STEAM Activity: Biology x Micro:bit

Date:

03 May 2023, Wednesday

Time:

14:30-17:30

Venue:

Room E1030, Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Speaker:

Dr Matthew LI, Senior Lecturer

Introduction:

In the previous workshop, Scientific Investigation x Micro:bit, some basic programming skills related to scientific investigation using Micro:bit were demonstrated. In this workshop, we will focus on how to utilise Micro:bit to facilitate some Biological experiments. A Micro:bit infection game and DIY colony counter/ colonometer using Micro:bit will be demonstrated step-by-step. For physicists and chemists, don't worry. They are coming very soon!

Workshop 8:
Designing a STEAM Class: Making Paper Roller Coaster

Date:

25 April 2023, Tuesday

Time:

14:30-17:30

Venue:

Room E1030, Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Speaker:

Dr Oscar FUNG, Lecturer

Introduction:

Roller coasters are a good example of demonstrating the conservation of energy. However, constructing a roller coaster model can be expensive and time-consuming. Herein, we will demonstrate the use of paper to build a roller coaster model in a classroom.

Workshop 7:
Fabricating a Solar Cell in a Cooking Fashion

Date:

14 April 2023, Friday

Time:

14:30-17:30

Venue:

Room E1030, Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Speaker:

Dr Oscar FUNG, Lecturer

Introduction:

Basic principles and fabrication methods of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) will be introduced. The term "dye-sensitized" implies that the dye layer itself serves as an active layer and generates electrons after absorbing light. The dye is the key layer that generates electrons from the origin. Unlike research laboratories using synthesized complexes, herein dye made of natural fruit will be used and handled in a home kitchen. This activity is designed to be implemented in the school's laboratory.

Workshop 6:
STEAM Activity: DIY UV-box x Micro:bit [New]

Date:

12 April 2023, Wednesday

Time:

14:30-17:30

Venue:

Room E1030, Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Speaker:

Dr Matthew LI, Senior Lecturer

Introduction:

STEAM project is one of the most popular way to conduct STEAM education and innovation training in secondary schools. However, most of them (e.g. robotics, smart home, AI) are mainly focusing on technology and engineering. Seldom the traditional science subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Biology are incorporated into the project. Therefore, in this workshop, we will introduce an all-round STEAM project to you. We are going to make a DIY UV-box which can be used for objects disinfection. Micro:bit will be utilized to control the UV-box using simple coding. Finally, the disinfection effectiveness will be examined by using spread plate method.

(We can help to implement the project at your school. Priority will be given to the teachers who joined this workshop)

Designing a STEAM Class: Building a Solar Car

Date:

28 March 2023, Tuesday

Time:

14:30-17:30

Venue:

Room E1030, Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Speaker:

Dr Oscar FUNG, Lecturer

Introduction:

As an example of using renewable energy, a solar car model will be built to demonstrate the use of solar panels to generate electricity. Such clean energy can also be used to power various electronic products. Throughout this activity, students can learn circuit design and some of the key components of a solar car. In addition, a comparison between a LED lamp and a tungsten bulb on the charging time will be studied.

Workshop 4:
STEAM Activity: Scientific Investigation x Micro:bit

Date:

22 March 2023, Wednesday

Time:

14:30-17:30

Venue:

Room E1030, Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Speaker:

Dr Matthew LI, Senior Lecturer

Introduction:

Writing a program is not the ultimate goal of programming. Instead, programmers always design programs to facilitate human activities, including experiments. In the real world, no scientific research can be done without computers and programs. In STEAM education, however, we seldom find learning activities integrated with programming and science investigation. In this workshop, STEAM activities or experiments using Micro:bit to facilitate science investigation, such as measurement of water flow rate, water turbidity, and temperature, will be illustrated step-by-step (Some materials will be provided). I strongly believe you could replicate the activities yourself after this workshop.

Room E1030, Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Speaker:

Dr Oscar FUNG, Lecturer

Introduction:

From 2019 to 2022, around 300 solar generation systems have been installed in aided schools and non-Governmental organizations under the "Solar Harvest" programme in the Green School 2.0 scheme. In this workshop, several units are developed to facilitate schools' teachers to deliver background knowledge of the programme.
